Garrett County has 90,000 acres of public land, seven lakes, seven state parks, two National Parks and one municipal park.

Battlefields
National Battlefields, such as Antietam and Monoacy, remind us of the bloodiest day in the Civil War and a battle that became the Civil War's turning point.

A National Monument and Historic Shrine
Maryland is best known for the battle that inspired Francis Scott Key to pen "The Star Spangled Banner" during the defense of Baltimore from Fort McHenry. Now you can pay your respects to those great men who gave their lives for our freedom at this National Monument and shrine.

Maryland's National Parks
Maryland boasts 23 national park units, each full of great scenery, nature, culture, history and recreational opportunities.

In addition, the area is full of historical parks that mark battlefields, historic sites, scenic trails, a national monument and a national seashore.

Assateague Island National Seashore

Famous for its wild ponies, luminous white sands beaches, rolling dunes and marshes, it is a truly natural east coast seashore experience.

Capital Region
If you wanted to camp at Greenbelt Park it would be just a stones throw away from Washington, D.C., giving you the opportunity to visit our nations capitol without spending so much money on hotels and room service.

Tent areas and R/V campsites put you right up close to Washington, D.C, historical parks, the Catoctin Mountains, and some incredible fishing opportunities on the Potomac River.

If you wanted to get further away from the city take a trip to scenic view of ridge tops and valleys along the Appalachian Trail. Running from Maine to Georgia this is a prime location for hiking.

Backcountry campsites at Annapolis Rock along the Appalachian Trail, is great for hiking, rock climbing, and admiring the vast rural landscape at Greenbrier State Park.

Maryland camping is a great opportunity to teach yourself and the children about the planets and the night sky. One of my favorite things to do is look for constellations and for just a few dollars you can pick up a star finder. It's not hard to do and it is a lifetime of knowledge and fun for everyone.

Chesapeake Bay
A national treasure its winding rivers deep forests, lush marshland, sheltered coves, and on open waters give any visitor more than they could have asked for.

Potomac River
The Potomac River begins near Thomas, West Virginia and winds its way as Maryland's southern border all the way to its confluence with the Chesapeake Bay.

Today, there are countless ways to enjoy the river's land and waterscapes. Hike and bike on the many trails found within the region.

For canoeists and kayakers planning overnight excursions, backcountry paddle-in campsites are found along the Patuxent and Potomac rivers.

Cedarville State Forest
With its 27-site family camping area, stretches across land once favored by Piscataway Indians as a winter camping ground due to the mild climate and abundance of game.

Point Lookout State Park
A beautiful autumn getaway featuring wooded campsites, camper cabins, and a riverside cottage. Point Lookout's history as a notorious Civil War prison camp adds to the area's mystique.

Western Maryland
A stone's throw from Deep Creek Lake you will find pet-friendly, family oriented commercial campgrounds perfectly situated near forest trails and below mountain passes.

Rocky Gap State Park

Campsites not only offer direct access to hiking and mountain biking trails, but also put you near great golfing and freshwater scuba diving.

Gunpowder Falls State Park
Local outfitters are available to line up canoes, bikes, inner tubes, or complete guide services. Plenty of trails and a blue-ribbon trout streams are waiting inside.

Just a short drive from Baltimore and other exciting destinations, you'll find R/V parks, campgrounds, and a "recreation farm" that has been given the highest rating by the renowned Woodall's camping and RV directory.

Assateague Island National Seashore
Hit the beach all year long where both oceanfront and bay front camping is available from March to November.
