Kayaking Safety and Lessons

Every kayaker has his or her own abilities and limitations, which is what makes the sport so versatile and fun.  It is most important that you know what you can handle. Like any sport that involves nature, kayaking requires good judgment and careful preparation.

Equipment failures and the failure to be equipped cause troubles that are unexpected.  How you deal with those issues will make or break a trip.

Preparation
Preparation is the first and best line of defense.  It's not just learning skills and using them that challenge the rider, changing weather conditions, water levels and hazards that may or may not be seen add to the challenge.

Training for the unexpected and preparing for your trip in advance will set you up to have an adventure of a lifetime. Most importantly you should know your limits and work within yourself.  Using your common sense will keep you safe in the long run.

Before you go on a trip make sure you understand the weather conditions.  Unexpected wind and rain can make your trip difficult as well as change the conditions on the river.

River Waters
River water level is one of the biggest issues.  A high water level can hide large rocks and deceive any kayaker, leaving no room for error.  Knowing where hazardous whitewaters are is important.

If you are not familiar with a river it is best to talk to a professional outfitter from the area or join a group.  In fact it is always better to go with a group then it is to go alone, not only for company but also for safety's sake.

Equipment
When you get to the waterfront look over your craft and make sure it is in good shape before you put it in the water.  Make sure all the compartments are secure and any goods or gear you might need to take is stowed properly.

Planning
Safe landing spots and river access to roads and highways will make your trip easier and more fun.

Proper trip planning is important, sometimes it is easier to let a professional do this end of the legwork so that you can enjoy the river and let others make the schedule.

If you are one to do all the planning yourself make sure you have a good map and know what weather conditions to expect as well as parts of the river that could be hazardous.

Know your itinerary, make sure you plan your trip and tell others where you are going and when you will be back.

A trip with clear goals is important, not only so others can know when to expect you but also to help you pace yourself. Never be afraid to find an experienced guide to show you the way, especially if you are paddling into unfamiliar territory.

Kayaking in the ocean, hiking or biking no matter what activity you are planning, whenever you are heading out into nature you should have a partner.  Not only can it be more fun to have more company it is also a safer way to enjoy Nature.

Lessons
Kayaking is not just about getting in a boat and paddling.  It is a sport that requires skill, and skill involves preparation.  No matter if you are new to the sport or if you have been away for a while lessons are a great way to learn.

A qualified instructor who is certified by the American Canoe Association will give you great advice and make you more confident.

If you don't want to go through classes it is always beneficial to find a local paddling club.  Many of them have certified instructors within their ranks and you might be able to get some tips or arrange private lessons.

A guided trip is also a good option. Many can include basic paddling instructions and equipment rental.
